When do wisdom teeth need to be removed?
Wisdom teeth are most often removed because there is not enough space in the jaw. As a result, the teeth often do not break through completely or even remain trapped in the jawbone. Among other things, the position of the teeth plays a decisive role. If the wisdom teeth are crooked and could damage the neighboring teeth, there is hardly any way around extraction. In addition, inflammations and infections can also mean that the teeth have to be removed.
If, on the other hand, the wisdom teeth have enough space in the jaw and grow out healthy and straight, surgery is not necessary.
Procedure of the treatment & duration of the surgery
In our Munich practice, the type of procedure depends on the location of the tooth. If the wisdom tooth has already erupted completely, it can be extracted relatively straightforwardly with pliers. However, in cases where the tooth is fully or partially enclosed in the jawbone, oral surgery is required. This involves making a small incision in the mucosa to gain access to the tooth and surrounding jawbone. Depending on the exact location of the tooth, it can be removed either as a whole or in pieces. After the wisdom tooth is extracted, the wound is carefully sutured.
Wisdom teeth can be removed individually, in pairs, or all four teeth at once. The duration of the surgery is between 5 and 10 minutes for each tooth.

What is possible in our Munich dental practice?
In principle, there are three options for anaesthetising the patient during wisdom tooth removal. The first method is also the most common procedure: the patient receives a local anaesthetic by injection, so that only the affected area is numbed and the patient remains fully conscious. The second option is the so-called twilight sleep, which is induced by administering a medication. If a patient opts for treatment under twilight sleep, they remain responsive during the procedure, but are deeply relaxed and free of anxiety. You can choose between these two options in our Munich dental practice.
The third and final option would be general anaesthesia, in which you lose consciousness during the procedure. This method is rarely necessary nowadays and is therefore not offered in our practice.

To optimally support the healing process, it is important to follow the dentist's instructions. Therefore, we provide you with comprehensive information in our practice about what you should observe after wisdom tooth surgery. Starting with eating and drinking, through to pain relief and aftercare.
Eating & drinking after surgery
After wisdom tooth removal, the tissue is often swollen, so eating and drinking can be difficult. It is best to drink initially with the help of a straw and only eat pureed or very soft foods. However, you should avoid warm drinks and foods, as these can trigger secondary bleeding. Dairy products should also be avoided for a few days after surgery, as lactic acid bacteria are bad for wound healing and can promote inflammation. In addition, it is recommended to rinse your mouth carefully after each meal, as brushing your teeth will not yet be fully possible.
Important behaviors to relieve pain & avoid complications
After wisdom tooth surgery, you may experience soreness, swelling, and minor postoperative bleeding. To relieve the pain, you will be prescribed painkillers for the next few days. At home, you should rest, keep your head slightly elevated and cool the swellings. The swelling will last for a few days until it eventually subsides. In addition, on the day of the surgery, you may experience minor secondary bleeding, but this is completely normal.
However, you should contact us immediately in case of heavy bleeding, the same applies to severe pain and hardening in the operated area.
